If a sole proprietorship is formed with a name other than the individual's name (example: John Smith's Fishing Shop), a Fictitious Business Name Statement must be filed with the County Clerk or County Recorder where the principal place of business is located. If the principal place of business is located outside California, the name will be filed with the Sacramento County Clerk-Recorder.
